BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF BOOKS

1. The Living Environment- Biology Lessons. (5th Edition)

(Now in standard square back binding for textbook use)

(Laminated covers, comb binding: $29.95 each (ON SALE); (NEW) Laminated covers, square back binding: $34.95 each

This is a unique teacher-made book that is different than anything you have ever seen. It is especially good for hard to reach students, but has separate advanced sections for your regular groups. Research shows that connecting new information to information that students are familiar with is essential for good learning. Each lesson in this book begins with an analogy or metaphor to give your students an understandable model that they need as a link to the new biology concepts being taught.

Other features include a "simple to complex" approach that starts with basic introductory information that is easy to read. The introductory information is then followed by more advanced material in the "Enrichment" sections. The internet sites listed in the Appendix have been carefully selected, will save you time, and include additional links. The Main Ideas, Essential Questions, Objectives, and Performance Indicators are life savers if you are doing curriculum mapping or need to write comprehensive lesson plans for your administrator. This book is great for any teacher with a busy schedule and looking for something different to use in the classroom. Your students will not only read this book, but they will understand the information! This is my #1 seller. Plastic comb binding (above; 5th edition) Square back glue binding (above; 5th edition)

2. NEW !!

The Living Environment- L.E.A.F. Study Guides (Living Environment Abbreviated Facts)

(Class of 10 = $69.95; Class of 5 = $39.95)

Great for starting the beginning of each unit with the "Big Picture." (whole to parts approach), for review at the end of each unit, helping absent students catch-up, or Regents review. Each student package consists of seven, double sided L.E.A.F. Study Guides (14 pages total). For each unit, all the "major understandings" are condensed on one side of each page for quick and easy reading (Scientific Inquiry and Ecology use two sides). The diagrams below do not do justice to the appearance of these study guides. The pages are beautifully colored prints, laminated for year-long protection, and are printed double sided. Each page is 3-hole punched for convenient storage in the student's notebook. These pages are similar to the stiff, quick review college study sheets sold in major bookstores.

In many cases, the language used in the "Major Understandings" have been simplified for easier understanding. These pages are great for students that have a tough time preparing for exams. Each sheet contains the basic information required to understand each unit. Once the students have mastered these sheets, they will then be ready to move on to any additional information desired by the teacher. An order for a class of 10 includes seven, double sided pages per student for a total of 70 double sides pages (140 total pages). This top quality product is one that your students are sure to use and appreciate.

These pages are laminated and printed on both sides (total of 14 pages/student)

Each page is 3-hole punched and divided into sections. Each section represents a

"Major Understanding" that is written in easy to understand language and accompanied

by colorful diagrams representing the meaning of the "Major Understanding."

3. BIO-CUBICS (New Sept. 2011)!!

Class of 20 (total of 60 cubics supplying 6 cubes to each team of two students; in other words, 10 teams = 20 students) = $21.95

Additional set of 6 cubes available at $2.20 after purchase of class of 20 (10 teams)

Capture your student's minds with these one of a kind manipulatives.

With "Bio-Cubics" there is no way your students cannot focus !

These fascinating 3 dimensional cubes will force students to read, analyze, sequence, and comprehend while rotating and stacking these unique structures. This is active learning at its best and is perfect for cooperative group activities.

Each set has six identical cubes (1 set/ team of two). Each side contains a different picture. The pictures represent different steps in a process that the students must learn. After you first review the basic process in class, the students will be given the cubes and asked to arrange the cubes on their desk to show the proper sequences of steps in the process being studied (ex. steps of natural selection, mitosis, etc.). A simple walk around the room will let you immediately see misconceptions and point out any blocks that are not sequenced correctly (for students to think about again). Eventually, they will get it correct. You will see them debating with each other and having fun at the same time. The cubes are also an excellent way to review each unit.

The great thing about the cubics is that they are sturdy, laminated, structures that allow you to pick them up at the end of one class and use them over again in the next class. One master set is all you need. In addition, each kit comes with reproducible student worksheet that will allow the students to record what they did and answer questions that will further solidify their understanding. A teacher guide is also provided. The 2011 stock cubic sets presently available or in production are:

1. The Scientific Method

2. Life's Levels of Organization

Don't see what you want ? I will custom design sets for teachers. Just E-mail me. State the Unit (ex. Genetics, Ecology, etc.) and the process or sequence you want designed (ex. crossing over, menstrual cycle, etc.). For one class set (ex. 60 cubics at $21.95) I will need approximately 3 days from the date that I receive payment before shipment is possible (for larger orders I will need up to 10 days). I charge the same price as my existing sets.

Images above show six different samples of cubes. Each team (2 students) would get 6 cubes (Ex. 6 of one of the cubes shown above- depending on what biology process you ordered). Pictured above are cubes for the processes of DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, levels of living organization, natural selection, diffusion, and the scientific method. Sold pre-cut (no cutting required) and laminated. Just fold and tape. Note that as of 2/14/12 the background color on the cubics will be white (images will still be colored).

NEW! 11. Animated Tutorials. (for Macs only)

($24.95; Reproducible; 15-20 cards each; Teacher Guide, Answer Key)

These CD's are intended to be used individually by the student at school (load into school computers) or at home (student copies may be made by teacher for students to take home). These programs can also be used for class lectures in which the teacher calls out student names to answer CD questions and to describe the motions to be used in the drag-drop sequences.

These are great for introductions to new topics, review, remediation, and homework (ex. flip-flop teaching approach).

Each CD contains scrollable text information, animated lessons, drag-drop learning activities, and periodic questions. During the program a cartoon character (Dewey) helps to highlight the main points. New scientific words are highlighted in red and may be "clicked" to hear the pronunciation of the word.

The questions allow students to type in answers after reading each short mini-lesson in the program. If the student is incorrect, the program automatically sends the student back to the mini-lesson for remediation. The student then goes back to the question to try again. This is repeated until the question is answered correctly.

A page with the students name or student ID number appears at the end of the program to signify that the student has successfully completed the program. This may be printed and used by the student as evidence that they successfully completed the lesson (ex. evidence they did their homework).

These CD's are a great bargain since the teacher can duplicate as many copies of the program as is necessary for each student (no site license). Also included is a teacher guide and the answers to the CD questions. There are only two program available now: 1) Immunity 2) Energy Flow Through an Ecosystem (Energy Pyramid), but I anticipate new programs. The next CD availalbe will be Photosynthesis vs. Cell Respiration. I am hoping to develop programs that will play on a PC in the near future.

NEW! 12. Regents Computer Exam Prep CD (Macs only)

($21.95 - $24.95; Reproducible; 20-25 questions each; Teacher PDF exam copy and answer key)

These CD's are intended to be used individually by the student at school (load into school computers) or at home (student copies may be made by teacher for students to take home). These programs can also be used for class lectures in which the teacher calls out student names to answer CD questions.

These are great for preparing students for the Regents exam. The average student usually can complete the exam in 20 to 30 minutes depending on the number of questions in the exam.

Each CD contains 20 to 25 questions that are carefully selected to represent the unit. During the program the questions are randomly scrambled so that if the test is taken over again the questions are not necessarily in the same exact order. This helps prevent cheating and encourages reading and thinking if the exam is repeatedly taken.

The questions are multiple choice and allow students to type the answer in an "answer box" after reading each question. If the student is incorrect, the program automatically sends the student to a remediation page. The student is then sent back to the question to try again. This is repeated until the question is answered correctly.

A page with the students name (and/or student ID number) appears at the end of the program along with the number of questions wrong and the exam score. This page may be printed (or just viewed by the teacher) and used by the student as evidence that they successfully completed the exam.

These CD's, like the Animated Tutorials, are a great bargain since the teacher can duplicate as many copies of the program as is necessary for each student (no site license). Also included is a teacher pdf copy of the exam and answer key to the CD questions. There is only one program available now: Scientific Inquiry (25 questions + remediation), but I anticipate new programs. I am hoping to develop programs that will play on a PC in the near future.

14. BIO-BAGGIE ACTIVITIES (NEW)

(1 package containing 5 baggie activities = $34.75)

The Bio-Baggie Activities are self-contained. The activities involve mini-simulation labs, model building, and games that simulate and/or demonstrate biology structures and/or processes such as diffusion, evolution, DNA replication, etc. Each activity comes in a zip lock baggie that contains all the equipment needed for a team of two students. Also included in the baggie are laminated instructions and a re-usable, laminated data page* with a water soluble flow pen*. A separate master conclusion page, additional master data page, and teacher answer key/guide are provided. These activities are meant to be used as short, hands-on, introductions to major concepts. Most of the activities should take only 15-25 minutes to complete. The activities are re-usable as you proceed from one class to the next. Just have the students return everything to the baggie and they are ready for the next class. These are great time savers. They are also perfect for students that have missed class. All you need to do is hand them a baggie and they are ready to go. One package contains 5 baggie activities/topic that can be used for 5 pairs of students (10 students). Two baggie topics are presently available. More activities will be available in the future. Descriptions of the activities presently available include:

*(only mini-simulation labs come with a Data page and flow pen)

1. DIFFUSION. Students will simulate kinetic energy, random motion, membrane selectivity, different molecular concentrations, and demonstrate how these processes relate to diffusion (see photo below).

Ex. Diffusion Baggie package contains 5 labs like the one shown above

(plus separate master conclusion page, additional master data page, and teacher answer key/guide)

2. DNA, GENES, CHROMATIN, AND CHROMOSOMES. Students will create "histone-DNA" models to demonstrate the relationship between DNA, genes, chromatin, and chromosomes. Students will also demonstrate the histone difference between active chromatin (with genes ""on") and non-active chromatin (with genes "off") . Finally, this activity is a great way to show how and why chromatin condenses back and forth between chromosomes and "loose" chromatin strands in the nucelus.

I make every effort to ship your merchandise as soon as possible (usually 1-2 days), but rare circumstances may warrant a longer time period (you may request an estimate prior to making your order). After an order is made, I usually E-mail the customer with an estimate of when I expect to ship their merchandise. Please note that the USPS does not guarantee 1-3 day Priority Mail delivery (most do make it in 1-3 days), therefore, I will not take responsibility for Priority Mail deliveries made by the USPS that exceed the 3 day shipment estimate.
